ArtsWAVE to Open Third Annual “10x10x10” Invitational Exhibition of 10 Hudson Valley Artists from June to October in Downtown Ellenville, NY with June 29 Reception

ELLENVILLE, NY, June 10, 2008 – Culled from the diverse fields of metals, photography, wood and ceramic sculpture and mixed media, the power of 10 talented, creative and established Greater Hudson Valley area artists will once again be on full display this summer in 10 individual storefront windows in downtown Ellenville, in Ulster County’s Rondout Valley that reaches all the way out to the Hudson River.

According to the board of directors of ArtsWAVE, the newly formed arts commission of Wawarsing and the Village of Ellenville, the third Annual 10x10x10 Invitational Storefront Exhibition featuring the work of 10 Hudson River artists who live or work in 10 towns along or nearby the Hudson River will take place from June 29 to October 5 throughout the downtown business district.  The exhibition will be opened with a reception at the ArtsWAVE Art Center on Market Street on Sunday, June 29 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The 10 artists selected by the 10x10x10 curator, Judy Sigunick, an internationally recognized painter and ceramic artist from Cragsmoor, NY, include:

·         John Battaglino, Warwick

·         Jean Bayrak, Pearl River

·         Ada Pilar Cruz, Peekskill

·         Judy Hoyt, New Paltz

·         Lorrie Fredette, Saugerties

·         Kirsten Kucer, Beacon

·         Leonie Lacouette, Gardiner

·         Keith Long, Manhattan

·         Group of 4, including Laura Moriarty, Rosendale

·         Ryan Sullivan, Poughkeepsie

“The artists represent their Hudson Valley communities, the value of diversity, a collaborative effort amongst themselves, as well as our business owners and civic leaders,” says Sigunick.  “In the absence of immediate commercial goals, this storefront project aims towards a true partnership with local Greater Ellenville area businesses and property owners to bolster the growth of the community.  This summer’s selection includes established painters, sculptors, printmakers, new media and technology, installation art and more.  For the artists, we offer opportunities for them to make art that will enrich and enliven the widening, expanding regional community of the Greater Hudson Valley area.”

Accordingly, Sigunick has encouraged the artists to take a look at the storefront window space and give themselves latitude, often stifled by mercantilism and gallery expectations.  She asked the 10x10x10 artists to see the space as a “playground,” which prompted Manhattan’s Keith Long to say, “I like the ‘playground’ attitude as a sense of fun and humor should be more a part of the art scene.”

Private and commercial donors supporting the ArtsWAVE exhibition will honor each of the artists with a $100.00 stipend.

The 2008 10x10x10 exhibition will be joined this year by AWE, also known as “Art in the Windows of Ellenville,” which will showcase two- and three-dimensional original artwork of local Ellenville area emerging and professional artists.  Under the direction of Dennis Warner, former head of the English department at Ellenville Senior High School and WELV 107.9 FM radio deejay twice voted best deejay in the Best of Hudson Valley magazine award program, over 25 artists’ work will be seen in downtown Ellenville storefront windows.  Artists interested in participating can write to artswe2008@aol.com.
